Q. Are Microlights safe ?
A. Yes Microlights are very safe, if you look at the official statistics from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) will find that in proportion to the number of hours they fly each year, microlights are the safest form of private aviation in the uk. Although fragile in appearence modern designs are incredibly robust factory produced Aircraft and have to meet stringent design and safety regulations before they are granted a licence.
Q. Do i need a Doctors medical ?
A. No, a full medical is not required, but a signature is required from your GP on a Self Decleration form which is available to download along with the guidelines from the British Microlight Aircraft Association (BMAA) website, see the links page. Some medical conditions such as Severe head injuries, High Blood pressure, Coronary Disease, Epilepsy, some Diabetes, Fits, Blackouts etc, Psychiatric disorder or any other condition which could cause incapacitation would prevent your GP signing the form.
Q. Can I just have a trial flight ?
A. Yes, we do trial flights of 1/2 or 1 hour in length and on both Flex-wing and 3 axis microlights on our club Aircraft (see Our Aircraft), try out both and see which one is for you. All time can be counted towards your licence if you decide to take it up.
Q. Do you Fly in Winter ?
A. Yes, we fly all year round, including Flex-wing when the conditions are right and wearing suitable clothing. Some of the finest Flying to be had is done during the winter.
Q. Are there any Age limits ?
A. Yes, but only at the younger end, you have to be over 14 for the training hours to be counted towards a licence, you can go Solo from the age of 16 but have to be 17 before a licence will be issued.
At the older age range you are restricted only by your own ability and capability.
Q. Are there any Weight limits ?
A. Yes, we are very much at the mercy of the British weather but as we are open every day of the year apart from Christmas day, Boxing day and New Years day and Mondays we can still offer a large amount of flying days. We fly in winds up to 20mph and we need a visibility of 5 km to remain legal. Cloudbase needs to be above 1000'. Light rain can be flown through, but you would not enjoy it in a flexwing. Also bare in mind that even on Non flying days we are still here for ground school and exams. If the weather is unpredictable on the day of your lesson please ring us at 09:00 to confirm.
