To start with nothing but enthusiasm!! to fly a Microlight (3 axis or flex-wing) requires a Private Pilots Licence. The restricted licence requires a minimum of 15 hours flying, 10 of which have to be solo, which has several limitations therefore most Pilots simply complete the unrestriced licence which is a minimum of 25 hours , 10 of which are solo and including 2 cross country navigation flights and a final GST (General Skills Test, just like a driving test). As well as this you have to complete multiple choice exams in Air Law, Aircraft Theory, Human Performance Limitations, Meteorology, and Navigation. The exams whilst sounding daunting are easily studied and learnt as our 100% pass rate proves
How long will it take ?
No two people are the same, progression through the syllabus depends on personal aptitude, age, time available, budget and most importantly in this country the weather, most people go solo after approx 10 hours of flying. The average person books a couple of hours a week and spreads learning over several months, alternatively with good weather, luck and commitment it can be done quicker. Courses and block bookings are available with accomadation onsite or local B&B
Do i have to buy a Microlight ?
No you do not have to buy your own Microlight although you can if you want to and instruction
takes place on your own aircraft provided it meets the requirements of the BMAA (see links page), any advice and help will be given by your instructors here at Baxby Airsports as well as a wealth of information from other club members on what to buy or more importantly what NOT to buy. If you are not ready to take the buying plunge yet all instruction is carried out on the clubs own aircraft.
What can i do when ive got my licence ?
Thats when the fun realy starts, wether you get your own aircraft or join in with a syndicate (this gets you a share) aircraft you can start to visit the many airfields around. You can join the North Yorkshire Flying Club which is based at Baxby Airsports Cub, (You will recieve the club's montly newsletter whilst you are a student pilot). The club organises a variety of trips, social outings, Fly outs, overseas flying trips, guest speakers, bonfire nights etc the list goes on.................
